Pittsburgh Ready for a Massive Year

Based in Pittsburgh, PA, the Steelers are one of the most famous and successful NFL teams in America. Set up in 1933 by Art Rooney they were named after the abundent steel industry in the Pittsburgh area. One of the NFL’s great teams the Pittsburgh Steelers were set up as the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 8, 1933, by Art Rooney.

The control of the Steelers has remained within the Rooney family since its founding. The present owner is Art’s boy, Dan Rooney, who has given much control of the franchise to his boy Art Rooney II. Built in 2001, the stadium replaced 3 rivers Stadium which hosted the Steelers for 31 seasons. Prior to 3 rivers, the Steelers had played their games in Pitt Stadium and Forbes Field.

The team’s rivals are the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, and Baltimore Ravens. Within the state rivalry between the Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles also arose but they play against one another only once every four years as per scheduling rules. The competition between the Cleveland Browns and the Steelers started way back 1950 when they first played against one another. The Steelers continued to lose for 16 straight years. It was only in the near past that the Steelers took over the rivalry for the 1st time ever with a 17-3 record. To intensify the competition, previous head coach of the Steelers had essentially coached the Browns earlier in his career. On the other hand, the Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens have a really bitter division rivalry proven by countless remarkable match-ups between the two teams.

The Pittsburgh Steelers won their first game at the MT Bank Stadium in Baltimore and 3 years later, the Ravens crushed the Steelers in a game at the Heinz field. The rivalry between the Ravens and the Steelers is like a seesaw winning and losing against one another and be a great complement by showing their fans how they can field truly powerful defenses against one another.

The most unusual game of their competition happened in the 2005 AFC Wildcard playoff game when the Steelers made a come from behind win over the Bengals to challenge for a Super Bowl title. This actual win was thanks in part to the knee injury the Bengal’s quarterback experienced and so was compelled to leave the game. Later, in 2008, the Patriots were charged with videotaping hand signals of the opposing team’s coaches which added to more controversy.

Though the team have had an impact as one of the most competitive teams in the NFL, they still have to perform at their best to balance out every competitor they play against. 2008 was a fantastic year for the Steelers, and we are looking forward to great things for 2009.
